Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Monitors Does Size Matter I have been using the 24? desktop monitor Iâm currently typing on for what feels like forever. Itâs connected to my laptop because that screen isreallysmall. Most of the time, it works just fine for my needs. But there are times, like today when I was hosting a Twitter chat, when I could have benefited from multiple monitors or an oversized monitor. My single monitor did not allow me to quickly scan the chat feed while making comments and responding to questions. And if I tried to hop over to Google to look something up, God help me. On the Hunt for Evidence I started looking into multiple monitor and oversized monitor use to see if there were documented productivity differences. In a 2012New York Times article, Matt Richtel mentioned a study by the University of Utah, which found that productivity among people working on editing tasks was higher with two monitors than with one. Although financed by NEC Display, investigator and professor of communication James Anderson said he did not let his sponsor influence his findings. Since the NYT took his word for it, we will too. Professor Anderson claimed that more monitors cut down on toggling time among windows on a single screen, which can save about 10 seconds for every five minutes of work. If you have more than one monitor, he told the Times, âYou donât have to toggle back and forth. You can take in everything with the sweep of an eye.â This was exactly what I was thinking during my Twitter chat. âI Think I Need Glassesâ On the other hand, having two or more monitors doesnât necessarily mean the information on them is actually useful. For example, your individual displays may be very small, involving lots of scrolling, maximizing/minimizing, and squinting as you balance working with different documents,spreadsheets, and web pages. Why Making New Years Resolutions Suck - Later in the Year Remember waking up on New Years day and having all those good intentions to transform your life with a set of goals and resolutions that would totally allow you to become a new person in some way, versus all the previous years? The way you know you are going to wake up 365 days later and be a whole lot richer, thinner, happier and more successful. If only we could stick to those resolutions, heyâ¦.. I have always been an advocate of setting personal and professional goals as it allows you to focus on personal development and learning, rather than just a sense of drifting along and New Years resolutions are always an apt time to get stuck into some action points of the long stretching year ahead. However, I fear I am facing a U-turn on what has been my mindset for almost 20 years in that I donât think I actually believe in New Years resolutions anymore something I have been debating internally all year longâ¦.. and in fact as we head into the latter part of the year, it is even more prominent in my mind that my conclusion is- New Years resolutions suck. Why do we set them in the first place? My cynical answer is that it is the done thing to do: every magazine, website, blog, and employer will have a predictable âLetâs set some yearly goalsâ and I was definitely always guilty of this. I would set myself goals in the following areas: Health/ fitness-related However, as I am now at my fittest the last few years it was about maintaining my levels and weight as opposed to changing anything- so does that satisfy the definition of a goal? Financial As I am self-employed, my goal was always centred around revenue I generate through Qui Recruitment; there may be other goals such as investments and insurance policies- however, those are often âbooked inâ for annual revenue during the year around their renewal dates so not something you should ignore or wait until 1st Jan for? Home Having recently bought a new house in 2018 due to my divorce, this made a mockery of previous years where I would focus on one room renovation as a yearly goal. As I have learned over the last 12 months, you do what you can, when you can afford it and when you want it to happen!! And often you have to work around the specialists who are doing the renovations as everyone knows al good decorators are booked up months in advance So do you see my point? The premise of New Years resolutions is to give you a fresh start and focus to your new year. However in business, we may write a years business plan but we will review it quarterly at the very least- we will amend areas that have changed and rewrite the goals accordingly Instead of New Years resolutions, why not write a list of what you want to actually achieve right now, at the moment, and learn to become more receptive to opportunities as they happen, becoming more pragmatic and intuitive in how you live your life. We live in an ever-changing world where the pace is getting faster and the parameters alter more frequently. Or am I wrong and actually, just because I have experienced certain life events over the last 2 years which have made me live my life a little more freely mean that I am a fool?

But among this group of world influencers there are also everyday people who have found a special niche in which theyâve contributed at the highest level. Innovators who positively shape the world come from a âbeginnerâs mindâ and a loving, compassionate heart â" with an openness to see, learn, and experience new things on the way to being a better servant of the world. They engage with people in open, mutually-beneficial ways. Those with huge positive influence understand the power of relationships, connection, and engaging with the world openly. Theyâre not afraid to get âout thereâ â" connecting with others, sharing their knowledge and talents, offering their authentic and often contrarian viewpoints and opinions. Theyâve pushed beyond any introversion, shyness or reluctance to be who they are, and have learned how to relate well with others and build mutually-supportive relationships that catapult both parties to a higher level. They know that positive, supportive and authentic relationships are the foundational building blocks to anything and everything they want to achieve. They invest time and energy not in what is, but what can be. The people Iâve interacted with and interviewed whoâve made a huge positive impact in the world donât settle for conformity. They observe gaps and mistakes in common thinking and behavior, and trust themselves in their belief that itâs time to push the boundaries of whatâs accepted. The most powerful positive influencers donât need or want to be ârightâ â" they want to grow and be more effective. For that to occur, they walk right into critique, and they embrace challenge. Youâve experienced, as I have, scores of âleadersâ and high-achievers whoâve gotten where they are by stepping on the heads and backs of those in the way. These are not true leaders or influencers because their power is a sham â" it was obtained unethically and is shallow and weak, and canât be sustained over the long haul. I have encountered power-mongers who were crushing and cruel to their subordinates and I wondered when they would finally reap what theyâve sown. Over the long term, this day always comes. On the other hand, people who positively impact the world not only obtain amazing results in their work, but their process of obtaining these results â" how they operate in life is also inspiring and uplifting. They are happy to help and support others, and have an overflow of positive energy that enriches the lives of everyone they work with and connect with. These positive influencers want others to grow. They walk away from âsuccess-buildingâ opportunities that will be hurtful and damaging to others. They know that those unethical, demeaning or destructive approaches go against the very meaning and purpose theyâre committed to. They view the journey as the goal. Positive influencers donât take short cuts or go for the quick buck or easy answer. They donât view some arbitrary goal or outcome as a destination, because they believe there is no end â" itâs all in the journey. Itâs about what theyâre learning, experiencing, and building that helps others, and for that, there is no defined end point. They embrace failure more readily than others as âinformationâ that guides them. They are more fluid and flexible, and more open to the âhowâsâ because their ultimate goal is not about upholding their title, salary, reputation, stature or power, but about new ways to help and share what they know. They use their power and influence well. Sadly, itâs a common occurrence in business today to witness power and influence being wielded as a weapon. It hurts and destroys.
